My Favorite Gluten Free Pasta

I went out with some friends for lunch today, and we went to an Italian restaurant. Fortunately this place has a pretty good low-carb menu, which is also mostly gluten free. But I’d really miss pasta if I couldn’t make it at home.

My favorite gluten free pasta is Tinkyada (Pasta Joy) brand. They make all kinds of shapes, and it has a taste and texture almost like “regular” pasta. Plus, it’s made with brown rice flour + rice bran, so it’s even good for you!

A few notes about using it:

  • Use plenty of water. If you’re used to skimping on the water when you cook regular pasta, you’ll end up with pasta glue. Seriously. Use lots of water.
  • This pasta has a tendency to stick together while cooking, so be sure the water is really boiling when you add the pasta, and add a tiny drizzle of oil to the water to help the pasta not stick to itself.
  • If you’re making a pasta salad, cook the pasta until it’s nearly overcooked,  then rinse the cooked pasta really well. Use the salad within a day or two. Just like cold rice, cold rice pasta has a tendency to get hard and unpleasant.
  • You can make a nice, creamy alfredo sauce really easily with rice pasta, since it’s a little starchier than normal pasta. Just add cream and some freshly grated parmesan cheese (not powdered cheese, unless you want gritty sauce), and stir while it cooks over medium-low heat. The starch from the pasta will thicken the sauce.

This brand of gluten free pasta is available at my regular grocery store, and my local health food store. I’ve seen it on Amazon too, so that’s an option if you can’t find it locally.
